Universal Service - suspension of services on 27 December 2003
Postcomm allowed Royal Mail to suspend postal services on Saturday 27 December 2003.
Normally, Royal Mail makes a last collection and delivery on Christmas Eve, followed by two days off - Christmas Day and Boxing Day, on 25 and 26 December. Becuase in 2003 the day after Boxing Day fell on a Saturday, and there are no deliveries on Sundays, Postcomm agreed to Royal Mail's request for Saturday 27 December to be declared a "no service" day. The decision was in line with Royal Mail's past practice, and also had the support of consumer body Postwatch.
