Postcomm consults on its methodology

26 June 2000

Postcomm today asked interested parties how they would like to be consulted as it begin its work regulating postal services.

The commission’s main duties are to:

  • Ensure customers have a universal postal service;
  • Encourage effective competition between postal operators; and
  • Encourage efficiency and economy

Today’s document also seeks the help of the postal industry and its customers in setting up a database of those who should be consulted.

Postcomm Chairman Graham Corbett said: “This document is an essential first step by the commission. Postcomm wants to be an accessible, well understood, customer focused office. It is essential that all interested groups – whether they represent domestic customers, postal operators, commercial interests, postal workers, local authorities or others – have the opportunity to have their say.”

Note to editors

A universal postal service provides one collection and delivery per working day and registered post at affordable uniform prices.

Postcomm is a new national regulatory authority for the postal sector in the UK.  Under the Postal Services Bill, now before parliament, it will become an independent statutory body that will regulate the licensed postal sector, including the new Post Office company.
