Personal information charter
Postcomm – the Postal Services Commission – is an independent regulator. We are required to exercise our functions in the manner we consider best calculated to ensure the provision of a universal postal service and to further the interests of users of postal services, wherever appropriate by promoting effective competition between postal operators. We were set up by the Postal Services Act 2000 and are classified as a non-ministerial government department.
In order to deal with enquiries and offer advice to members of the public we sometimes need to handle personal information. All data is handled in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 to ensure that we protect your privacy. We are also bound by the confidentiality provisions of the Postal Services Act 2000.
If we ask for, or handle, your personal information we will:
- let you know why we need it;
- only ask for what we need, and not collect excessive or irrelevant information;
- make sure nobody has access to it who should not;
- only share it with other organisations when the law allows;
- only keep it for as long as we need to; and
- not make it available for commercial use.
You can get more details on:
- how to find out what information we hold about you;
- circumstances where we can pass on your personal information without telling you, for example, to prevent and detect crime or to produce anonymised statistics;
- our instructions to staff on how to handle your personal information;
- how we check the personal information we hold is accurate and up to date; and
- how to make a complaint.
