Ulf Dahlsten was appointed commissioner on 1 January 2008 for a three year term.Ulf Dahlsten

Mr Dahlsten is currently on a sabbatical from the European Commission, where he is director of emerging technologies and infrastructures - applications, at the Directorate-General Information Society.

Before joining the Commission, Mr Dahlsten was director of SECCOM AG and president and CEO of Icon Medialab International, an internet consultancy offering solutions in e-commerce, e-business and internet banking, among others.

Ulf Dahlsten has been actively involved in the deregulation of the Swedish postal, taxi and telecom services.

His previous roles were:

  • 1988 - 1999 Swedish Postal Services, first as director-general, then as president and CEO of Posten AB.
  • 1987 - 1988 chairman of Swedish State Railways.
  • 1982 - 1988 various posts in the Swedish government, including state secretary for energy, state secretary for communications and state secretary and chief of cabinet of the Prime Minister's office.
  • 1977 - 1982 Sodertajle city manager.
  • 1974 - 1977 National Price and Cartel Office, head of the food and agriculture division, then head of department for consumer goods and services.
  • 1971 - 1974 head of the office of the Governor of Stockholm.
  • 1970 - 1971 adviser to the Mayor of Stockholm.

Mr Dahlsten has also been chairman of the holding company for TNT Express Worldwide and of the Swedish Association of Economists, as well as director of the board for both Stena Line and the holding company for SAS, and a member of the executive committee of the Swedish Federation of Industries. 

Ulf Dahsten started his career as a mathematics teacher at the Royal Institute of Technology. He holds degrees in civil engineering (Royal Institute of Technology) and in economics (Stockholm School of Economics).
